Fizzling Out

Abby got some Elmo bath fizzies from one of her friends for her birthday and it has been a huge hit at our house.   I figure, what better time to sneak in some chemistry learning. Today we are making our own bath fizzies and working on some new scientific vocabulary (pipette, test tube, dissolve, and dilute). MAKING BATH FIZZIES First we make bath fizzies.   As a back-up, I make sure that we have some extra bath fizzies around so that I can switch them as we wait 24 hours for ours to set up if it looks like they won’t set up. I explain to the kids that bath fizzies are made up of a weak acid like citric acid in lemons and sodium bicarbonate like in baking soda.   Yes, I did tell the kids that.   I get asked all of the time if I really tell the kids the background info.   I do.   You never know what they’ll remember.   Then I simplify, usually with something that they can visualize – today I told them that if they took some lemon juice and dropped it on some on bakin

Scaling up

The kids had math night at their school about a month or so ago now and it was great!   The school filled the gym with math focused games and the kids got to have dinner and then play games like hopscotch (both a shapes and a numbers version), counting how many times they could jump rope, dancing to songs about numbers, measuring out liquids, weighing things and much more.   The activities were set up carnival-style so that successful completion yielded little prizes.   Each activity also was marked with the grade level that should be able to accomplish the task, for the parents.   My children took the grade level markings as a challenge.   Briana especially marched up to the tasks whether they said 3 year olds or 4 th graders can do them and gave them her best shot.   One of the games labeled a second grade activity involved a scale.   The kids had to go up to the scale, sort 3 objects from heaviest to lightest, then devise their own way to discover if they were right and
